Mentor Vs. Coach – TBL Lesson #16

Here’s a no-prep TBL/DOGME lesson for your learners – it works particularly well with adults and even better in business English courses.

Divide the board into two sections and name each section MENTOR and COACH. Ask students to differentiate both and add to the board as they discuss. The board below shows my students’ contributions to the topic.

When students are done discussing, work on some emergent language. If you’re unsure how to do so, click here for some guidance.

After that, tell students to think about a mentor they had that played a key role in their development. Allow students some time to share but not too much, as this will spoil the fun of the next part of the lesson!

Send students the following link:

ask them to click on FILE in the top-left corner, then MAKE A COPY and edit the presentation. Students should write their mentor’s name on the first slide, 4 characteristics that make them a good mentor, and three things they learned from this mentor.

When students are done, ask them to present, take notes, and work on emergent language, then provide them with some feedback.
